saturday’s song – day 179

after some careful consideration, i’ve decided to scale back “jam of the day” and curb song sharing to saturdays only. there are some other categories in the works too, and those will also be limited to specific days and have titles that are alliterations.

please, try to contain yourself. it’s exciting, i know.
[since sarcasm doesn’t translate well on the interwebz, that was me trying to be funny.]

today’s selection is a live recording of “stonefist” by HEALTH.

i highly recommend exploring more of their music, because there’s really nobody else out there doing what they do. if you’re familiar with crystal castles and/or max payne 3, then you’re more likely to recognize the sounds of HEALTH, since they’ve collaborated with cc (before alice glass split off) and they provided the soundtrack for MP3.

they’ve been around for quite a while but somehow managed to fly mostly under the radar. i first saw them in back 2009 at the empty bottle in chicago, and it was most certainly a show i’ll never forget.

since there’s no way to really describe their unique sound, here’s an excerpt pulled directly from good ol’ wikipedia:

The band’s unusual sound can be partially credited to the use of the Zoothorn, which is a permutation of microphone and guitar pedal and an occasional atonal sound without a symmetrical structure. Lyrically, the band describes the role of lyrics as being “purposely kept vague for the listener” “…[Lyrics] sort of begin to bring out this more individual quality to the whole thing like, ‘These are the lyrics, and this is the guy is singing them, so I can relate to that.’ Which is really not something we want. We wanted the vocals to have an even, unaffected feel. A softness, like a Zombies melody, or even a Gregorian chant. We aren’t just interested in being a noisy screaming band.

that being said, HEALTH leaves plenty open for personal interpretation, something that kind of seems like a dying art in the world of music these days. if you get a chance to catch them when they tour — do yourself a favor and go. it’s an experience you won’t forget, and plus it’s a legit excuse to get out of your own head and world for a bit, and dance like nobody’s watching.

enjoy.

And though we know how far we’ve come
We stay possessed by what we lost
And we both know, love’s not in our hearts

We’re never going backwards
We’re never growing young (not in our hearts)
We’re never coming back here
Remember, love’s not in our hearts

Are we all the same, different?
Promise you, the fire’s hot
Are we all the same, different?
Promised you to promise more

And though we know how far we’ve grown
We know it’s not in our hearts
We stay possessed by what we lost
No, not in our hearts

We’re never going backwards
We’re never growing young (not in our hearts)
We’re never coming back here
Remember, what you are

We’re never going backwards (not in our hearts)
We’re never growing young (not in our hearts)
We’re never coming back here (not in our hearts)
Remember, love’s not in our hearts
